ONLINE BOOTCAMP May 20- 31, 2024 (subject to change)

When: May 20-31, 2024 (subject to change)

Where: Microsoft Teams

What: Two-week online bootcamp for undergraduates interested in water and energy research

Why: Prepare yourself for a research position and earn at least $400 from the Justice in Data Fellowship (details below), if you complete the program (only available to students at US universities)

Undergraduate students interested in water and energy research are invited to apply for a two week-long online bootcamp (May 20-31, 2024). Students will gain skills in downloading and working with large data sets, learn good data practices, and develop a community of motivated undergraduate students!

Students interested in applying should have a research experience planned over the summer or should be interested in pursuing a research-based graduate degree.

After the bootcamp, students will apply what they learned in their summer research project. The bootcamp instructors will be available to participants throughout the summer as mentors and to answer any related questions. Students will have the opportunity to develop and publish an online tool for streamlining part of their research process (e.g., data access, visualization, etc.).

At the end of the summer, an online research symposium will be held. Participants will be encouraged to create a scientific poster detailing how they applied good data practices in their research.

Justice in Data Fellowship: Students affiliated with US universities have the opportunity to earn at least $400 for completing the program (bootcamp, summer mentoring, and research symposium). Students will receive $250 after completion of the bootcamp and an additional $150 after completion of the research symposium. Additional funds will be distributed if some participants do not complete the program.

Who should apply?

Undergraduate students interested in water and energy research. Students should be enrolled in a US university. Students should either be doing research over the summer or be interested in pursuing a research-based graduate degree program.

We especially encourage women and students from groups that are underrepresented in STEM to apply, including but not limited to Black and African Americans, Hispanics, Indigenous Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, Native Pacific Islanders, and persons with disabilities.

Investigator Workshops

Two virtual, 1-day workshops will be held in Fall 2024 to gather input from investigators (e.g., faculty, lab heads, post docs, etc.) on how we can evolve the program to best meet the cybertraining needs of research in their discipline.
